It is held annually in Sturgis, South Dakota and draws hundreds of thousands of motorcycle riders and enthusiasts from across the globe. History of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, or Sturgis Bike Week, was founded in 1938 by the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club. Originally conceived as a small gathering of riders with motorcycle races and stunts, the event has grown exponentially. The rally has survived various challenges including World War II, economic downturns, and COVID, to become an iconic event in the motorcycle community. Today, Sturgis Bike Week is celebrated for its blend of tradition and innovation, attracting riders of all ages and backgrounds.

When and Where is Sturgis Bike Week Held?

Sturgis Bike Week takes place during the first full week of August, transforming the small town of Sturgis, South Dakota, into one of the most populated areas of South Dakota. The rally spans ten days, with motorcycle events and festivities occurring throughout the Black Hills region. This scenic area, known for its stunning landscapes and winding roads, provides a perfect backdrop for the rally. Mount Rushmore is a popular destination for riders during the bike week.

Scenic rides through the Black Hills, including routes through Custer State Park which offer breathtaking views, like Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road!

Bike Shows

Sturgis Bike Week features numerous bike shows where enthusiasts can display their custom motorcycles. These shows highlight the creativity and craftsmanship of the biking community, showcasing everything from vintage bikes to cutting-edge custom builds. Popular shows include the Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show and the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building.  Custom motorcycles for advertisers are often displayed at these shows.

Major venues like the Buffalo Chip and the Iron Horse Saloon host top national and international acts, ensuring a vibrant and festive atmosphere throughout the rally (some of these spaces are only open once a year for Sturgis Bike Week).

Tips for Attending Sturgis Bike Week

Plan Your Trip Early

Given the massive influx of visitors and riders, it’s crucial to plan your trip to Sturgis Bike Week well in advance. Accommodations in and around Sturgis fill up quickly, so booking your hotel, campsite, or rental property early is essential. In some cases, you’ll need to book a hotel a year in advance for availability. 

Ride Safe

Safety should be a top priority during the rally. Wear appropriate riding gear, follow traffic laws, and be aware of your surroundings. The large crowds and high-energy environment can sometimes lead to accidents, so staying vigilant is important. Of course, with a large group of people, there are sometimes theft issues. Keep your belongings secured and it doesn’t hurt to have a GPS tracker or AirTag on your motorcycle.

Explore the Black Hills

While the rally itself offers plenty of excitement, take some time to explore the Black Hills region. Attractions like Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Custer State Park provide excellent opportunities for riding, sightseeing and relaxation.
